Thanks much, Kyle -- I'd meant to mention both the Wharton story and the Chopin one, and I apparently conflated the two.

Yeah, Art. Great post. But one slight correction. Unless Wharton also published a story called "The Story of An Hour," the author of that short story is actually Kate Chopin.

That said, I subscribe to Narrative e-mails and get regular stories sent to me. I confess I don't really read them. I'm still not yet game to read stories online.

Hi Art! I agree, if I thought I'd be up against Bausch in that sort of contest, I'd be even more intimidated about submitting than I already am. = ) Christina

Here here on this post, Art. I love Bausch, but find it a little more than unsettling that Narrative chose to give that prize to him rather than a writer who could greater benefit from the accolade.

A friend of mine was a finalist for that contest--a young, very talented, fresh MFA grad who might have seen a much-deserved career boost from the exposure, not to mention the money--and the fact that Narrative didn't seize the opportunity to usher in new writers to fold is depressing to say the least.

OK. Off the soap box now. Adios.
