Mystery Round-Up, Part I: Gruley & Bass

May 13, 2009

With the redistribution of the Washington Post Book World throughout the Outlook and Style sections, my latest round-up of mysteries is running in two parts, the first of which was published in the paper today, May 13. Both of the books featured in this first part struck me as fine reads, with each of them focussed on a crime from the distant past coming back to shake up the present. And I was glad to include both a first-time novelist — Bryan Gruley, who’s also the Wall Street Journal‘s Chicago Bureau Chief — and a veteran set of authors adding to a popular series: the two men who write under the name Jefferson Bass. The second half of the round-up should be published soon and continues the theme of past crimes, present troubles — in those cases with a European flair. Stay tuned!
