Long May Blossom Bloom

February 10, 2009

The Washington Post brought brief mention this morning that jazz singer Blossom Dearie died on February 7. I’ll admit I know little of her career in jazz, but she’ll always live long in my memory for her contributions to Schoolhouse Rock, a foundational part of my own childhood.

figure_eightIn honor of her passing, spend a few minutes with “Figure Eight” — offering “a chance to get off on your new math tricks” as Dearie’s haunting voice transports us from a dull schoolroom into a world of ice skaters, periscopes, and polar bears. “Place it on its side and it’s a symbol meaning infinity,” Dearie sings at song’s end. Here’s hoping our collective memory of her stretches long in that direction.
